Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested Brandon Williams’ variety at full-back could to help Manchester United break down more reticent teams. Brandon Williams, 19, was recalled at Burnley for his first Premier League start since December 1 and was a constant threat down the left and unfortunate not to claim a first-half assist in United’s 2-0 win.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer  said “I wouldn’t be surprised if he plays well because Brandon’s never let us down this season,” Solskjaer said. “He’s been excellent and just learning and growing and improving. I told him a few weeks ago he was gonna play and he’s just been focused on tonight and he did really well. I think [Williams’ variety in breaching opponents] is a fair tactical point, I’ve been thinking about that quite a few times. It depends, you want one left-footer and right-footer on both sides to break them down but Brandon is two footed and it’s a good attribute to have.”

Solskjaer’s preference is for Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to provide natural width but Williams has excelled as a right-footed left-back. Prior to the Boxing Day visit of Newcastle, United had won one of their last 17 Premier League matches with the majority of possession but prevailed against the Magpies and Burnley with the lion’s share of the ball.
