Premier League Headlines ( In Details )

How long will Christian Benteke’s goal drought last

Christian Benteke started his premier league career at  Aston Villa where he averaged just shy of a goal every two games scoring 49 in 101 appearances. He was also, for what it’s worth, unplayable on his day. it did not take long for him to win over the Villa fans – in his first season at the club he was an Adonis up front, scoring 19 goals in 34 games, impressing with his tenacious, physical displays, as the archetypal “horrible centre forward to play against.

Fast forward seven years later and the contrast could not be any starker – the Belgian is in a state that can no longer be simply described as a rut.He has scored just four Premier League goals since the start of the 2017-18 season, despite making 46 appearances. His move to Liverpool appears to have been the catalyst for his downfall In a single season with Liverpool the expensively-purchased forward scored  nine Premier League goals which was still alright considering the context – Brendan Rodgers was sacked and Jurgen Klopp arrived. Klopp immediately plummeted Benteke down the pecking order due to his unsuitability with Klopp’s playing style.

Premier League Museum Editor Notes: I have sympathy for Christian Benteke as the striker had no money interests in going to Liverpool. Playing for a big club is every player’s dream and considered a reward for players who put in hard work and do well. Unfortunately, like many other players joining different clubs at wrong time, Christian Benteke can only be wished best. At Crystal Palace he was expected to thrive being the main man upfront with Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend providing pace upfront and giving him the ball. Unfortunately once the confidence goes, it is very hard to get back as Benteke has found to his cost, and it is a sorry state of affairs for a player once lauded by fans up and down the country.

Why are Chris Wilder managerial methods successful ?

The secret is out, not just about a manager who has been in the profession for nearly two decades of consistent success, but of the qualities of his largely unheralded players, most of whom – like Wilder – have worked their way up the pyramid.

Chris Wilder has his side playing in a 3-4-2-1 formation to start with which is a very offensive line-up but works well in the defence as well. He tends to overload the midfield by switching formations to the 3-5-2 when a goal is needed. Wilder changes the shape of his side to the 5-3-2 with 3 central defenders and two wing-backs that can go on the counter-attack but more so acts as a fourth and fifth defender by getting behind the ball when the opposition is in possession. In short, Wilder keeps  his players well drilled in adapting to each formation he wants to play.

Premier League Museum Editor Notes: I would like to see a successful Chris Wilder and Sheffield United club this season. The higher the Blades are in the table when the January transfer window opens, the less tempted players will be by offers from elsewhere. Although in Chris Wilder case, it is largely known that players are half as good as they look due to manager’s tactics and man management skills.

Is Norwich next club to plunge into financial troubles ?

Norwich executives announced losses of £38m for the fiscal calendar year ending June 2019.The Canaries explained the losses comprised of £32.8m put in in operations largely as  transfer business was nullified by sale of Josh Murphy, Alex Pritchard and Leicester playmaker James Maddison.

Norwich are enduring a hard return to the Leading League sitting 19th in the desk. They are in desperate  need of a win after a spectacular three-two victory over reigning champions Manchester City.  Going back to past, Norwich were  in similar situation  as they got relegated in 2015/16. Parachute payments dried up, income dropped significantly from approximately £28m to £8m, leaving a £20m gap to plug – not ideal when you’re a self-funding football club without a wealthy benefactor.

Farke deserves many plaudits for getting premier league promotion for the club despite financial constraints. His work has transformed the club’s fortunes. The German tactician has turned no-hopers into high performers, promoting an expressive and thrilling style of football that’s sent his side soaring to the premier league…

Premier League Museum Editor Notes: As I have said many times before, relegation battles are a mini league of their own and a win against fellow relegation battlers are what determine survival in premier league historically. If the club is relegated, past premier league clubs have painfully realized that parachute payments are never sufficient. Daniel Farke has one of the most crucial matches may be not for his career but club’s survival with a match against bottom club Watford this weekend.

Will John Stones fill the gap left by Vincent Kompany ?

John Stones is back fit again after missing most of the season with injury, and comes into a defence fractured by the summer departure of Vincent Kompany and the long-term injury to Aymeric Laporte.

There are still high hopes at the Etihad that Stones, one of Guardiola’s first signings at the Etihad, can fulfil his potential and the 25-year-old wants to be the leader at the back that can guide the team to success for the players that are unable to contribute currently. John Stones himself said “We all have to step up as players and fight for our positions, our team-mates. We need to play for the lads that are injured, the likes of Aymer and Leroy [Sane], we need to work hard every day in training and set the standard for everyone. That’s what brought us success last season, how much we trained on things and pushed each other, fighting for positions, we have to take the responsibility as individuals and as a team. It’s been difficult getting injured. It was difficult because it’s me out of the team not being able to be there for the team and be selected for the manager.”

Premier League Museum Editor Notes: When Stones joined Manchester City from Everton, he was believed to be the perfect Pep Guardiola defender. The £47.5 million paid for Stones made him the second most expensive defender in history. At the time of his signing Stones was still only 22. He was far from the finished article, but Guardiola’s methods were expected to refine the centre back. Three years later and things haven’t really panned out as expected. Stones is now a two-time Premier League winner, but he is by and large the same player. 2019/2020 season may well turn out to be the make or break season for John Stones and whether his craft is good enough for the best soccer coach in the world.

Aubameyang made Arsenal captain , what can we expect ?

Granit Xhaka has been stripped of the Arsenal captaincy. His manager – Unai Emery told the Switzerland midfielder of the decision yesterday morning  but the head coach did not say whether he would play for the club again or not.  Unai Emery also clarified Arsenal’s prolific striker Pierre Emrick Aubameyang is the new captain of the North London club. There will not be another player’s vote to select the new captain and that the decision is closed. Hector Bellerin, Alexandre Lacazette, and Mesut Ozil will form the remainder of the leadership group.

Aubameyang  has a terrific potential to be Arsenal’s captain. There are many examples in past which have shown his character and leadership qualities. Think of him giving the penalty to Lacazette last season when the striker needed a goal for his confidence; think of him giving the penalty to Pepe against Villa when the new man needed to get off the mark at his new club. For a out and out goalscorer it demonstrates a willingness to think about the team above his own stats, and that’s not common.  Almost every single game he’s the man who faces up the media post-match, doing the TV interviews and so on. He’s hugely popular in the squad and his outlook and fun-loving nature generates a sense of collective well-being and togetherness. For a player as good as he is, and for someone who clearly enjoys some of the flashier things a footballer’s life can bring, he appears to do so without much ego.

Premier League Museum Editor Notes: Aubameyang as I had shared in Blog  previously  is the best candidate to take over Arsenal captaincy. Many inevitably make comparisons with Tony Adams, Patrick Vieira or Thierry Henry, who were big, imposing, and dominant players in their respective Arsenal sides. But conserving these names, it’s clear that not all captains are made alike. A captain’s role isn’t just to lead on the pitch; he  is consistent in performance and leads by example, often collects fines on the manager’s behalf, guides, counsels players, and is a strong influence behind the scenes.
