Premier League managers will meet with Mike Riley, manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), on Thursday to discuss the video assistant referee (VAR) system. This is second part of the meeting’s where northern managers will express their views on VAR. The meetings will include discussion of whether match officials should be allowed to consult pitch side monitors. Referees in all other competitions that currently use the VAR system are allowed to consult these monitors but those taking charge of Premier League matches are not.
Soccer in England is different, and VAR is not going well at all.The goal of VAR was to make subtle, but noticeable, improvements in refereeing. VAR is currently damaging English soccer in distinct ways. It is interrupting the beautiful, and often painful, surprise of a goal. Premier league celebrates goals that can be scrappy, players that can be emphatic on their rub of green with decisions, beach balls or wind can cause unexpected plays, referees can miss spectacular offsides. Premier League matches had more than just soccer between two teams. At some point in the first half of each game, a sleepy, ragged rendition of the chant “The ref-er-ee’s a wank-er” would rumble around the stadium. By the second half, in response to a serious mistake, like giving a penalty to the visiting team, the chant would be deafening. There was often the rendition of a touchingly rude accompanying song, “You Don’t Know What You’re Doing,” during which everyone would point at the referee as he scampered about, trying to do an impossible job. Then we would go home in the dark, happy or fuming, but at least agreed on one point: that the referee was a wanker and always would be.

Mason Mount’s future when Chelsea transfer ban is lifted

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is not concerned about the competition for places if the club’s appeal against their transfer ban is successful. The Court of Arbitration for Sport announced yesterday that Chelsea’s appeal against their FIFA transfer ban for irregularities in signing young players will be heard on November 20.
England star Mount, 20, is one of those who have benefitted from the club being prevented from signing players last summer, with Lampard having little option but to turn to his academy products to reinforce his squad, with Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Marc Guehi all getting chances. Mason Mount said ” We’ve had to deal with that during our whole time at Chelsea. You come into a team, there’s players from different countries and you’ve got to work and show how good you are. There’s always been that competition within Chelsea. We’re all ready for it. It’s exactly the same now. There’s still massive competition within the team and you’ve got to fight for your place. Whatever happens happens. We’ve shown what we can do with a ban, and we’re doing well. But looking at what we’ve done so far we can definitely carry on doing this.”

Sánchez Flores recipe for Watford improvement

Sánchez Flores calls for “positive energy” amid barren run. Watford’s head coach believes a change in mood will have to precede a change in fortunes, not the other way around. Watford are the only team which, after eleven games, languish at the foot of the standings, winless, and enduring the club’s worst beginning to a campaign in its 138 year history.
Quique Sánchez Flores said “We know that it’s a really tough situation,” he said. “Players lose confidence when we concede a goal in the first five minutes and we then tried to recuperate good feelings. We need to try to solve this situation. A good result will sort this. We had positives, we were able to do good things but this did not happen for a full match. It’s tough for the players but we need to go for the positive moments and make more of them. When we concede so early it is hard for us but we stayed in it.”

Wolves player’s are loving Europa League involvement

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez says his team is relishing an extra Europa League workload. They do not believe their European exploits are having an impact on their domestic form.
Raul said: “I think we are doing it well – both competitions are tough, but we know that this is what we want. Last season we all wanted to be in the Europa League and now that we are there we have to keep going and fight until the end.”
Nuno said “It has been a big challenge for everybody, for the squad, for us, for the club and for our fans – we are embracing the challenge. It’s not easy, it’s not easy at all. It’s very, very demanding, especially on the players. It’s very demanding because of the time of recovering, the amount of games we have, the high level of opponent that we are facing, in the Premier League, in the Europa League and in the cup. Having experience before helps you but doesn’t make it easier. It is always a big challenge and I think it’s always going to be harder. We always think about team selection. We always take a lot of time to prepare, time to find the best options, finding the right solutions.”

Previous season, Burnley had gone through similar performance issues but they were saved during mid season by early exit from Europa tournament. Wolves have certainly been put on a strain and next few weeks/month offer a difficult and punishing schedule ahead.
