Matt Le Tissier raves about Southampton duo Nathan Redmond and Moussa Djenepo
Southampton legend and Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier has singled out Nathan Redmond and Moussa Djenepo for praise as the Saints prepare for a return to Premier League action after the international break.
While Redmond went from strength to strength following Hasenhuttl’s arrival, weighing in with nine goals and six assists in all competitions last term, he is having a slow start to the campaign, with just one Premier League goal to his name. Djenepo arrived from Standard Liege in the summer after impressing with performances in former club but has been plagued by muscle injury to limit his contributions.
Le Tissier was quoted saying”There’s a lot of talent in the squad so hopefully we can get the best out of all of them. Nathan Redmond last season was pretty important for us. He gives us that pace, that edge and that directness to our play that causes people problems. Moussa Djenepo has also been a big plus – he got two fantastic goals away from home (against Brighton and Sheffield United) which have really turned the games in our favour and got us six points. It’s a shame he’s injured but it will be good to see him have a run in the side when he’s back.”
Southampton are next in Premier League action this weekend with a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Premier League fans would love to see Southampton successful and remain safe in the league. Their famed academy has contributed many talented players , managers and lots of entertaining matches to what the league is today.
Nuno Espirito Santo hails impact of Wolves striker Patrick Cutrone
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo has hailed forward Patrick Cutrone and believes he will keep improving. The 21-year-old who is tipped for bright future, moved to Molineux in the summer from AC Milan to provide competition in the attacking areas and assist Wolves in their European engagement this season. While his only goal came in a Premier League defeat to Chelsea, he’s chipped in with four assists in his opening 14 Wolves games across all competitions.Cutrone has shown some excellent strengths so far, with his overall hold up play and also his movement in the box looking top notch.
Nuno said about Cutrone – “Yes he brings something different to the table. His characteristics, he’s a fighter, and we appreciate it. He’s been working very well for the team. He’s a player that brings a lot of energy when he goes on the pitch. You have to take advantage of it while expecting him to improve – keep growing as a player.”
Premier League fans very well know that getting settled and instant hit in English Premier League is rare. A lot of established players and managers have been surprised in time taken to get comfortable with more physical and rugged terrains that the league presents. It’s also easy to forget that Cutrone is still aged just 21 and his best years are definitely in front of him. We wish him all the best for future ahead.
Big defensive problem that Pep Guardiola has to resolve at Manchester City
City are retaining plenty of their core principles especially on attacking front, but they are suffering from one specific issue. Whenever City face shots on their goal, they are relatively clear-cut rather than being difficult to score from. Opposing teams struggle to forge chances against Guardiola’s team but when they do, they tend to score.
When City first won the Premier League title under Guardiola’s leadership in 2017/18, they averaged 16.9 shots per match compared to six taken by the opposition, as well as commanding around 70 percent of the ball. Last year, this remained largely the same. City took an average of 16.8 shots per match, while facing only 5.7 and assuming 67 percent of the possession share. Under Pep Guardiola, Manchester City have gradually become increasingly refined as a well-oiled, dominant team. While the generics of his team’s performances remain strong and opposing sides still struggle to escape their own defensive third, this season has seen opposing team make the most of those few chances.
As Premier league fans had highlighted there could be many reasons for defensive issues. As highlighted in season’s predictions it could be Kompany’s leadership , Aymeric Laporte’s injury, Rodri’s integration or Nicolas Otamendi’s inclusion but regardless, it’s an issue that Guardiola will have to resolve swiftly considering the gap that has already been generated between his team and Jurgen Klopp’s.
Declan Rice unjustly overlooked in Golden Boy shortlist
For those Premier League fans unaware, Golden Boy award is awarded to the best player under 21 years of age who have impressed in one calendar year, spanning parts of two seasons. Coming back to the present, premier league had few U21 players who have impressed more or ascended quicker than Declan Rice in 2019. Hence, his overlooking for the award has been shocking .
Premier League had four players nominated for Golden Boy award and we ask the fans to consider whether it was fair to Declan Rice to not get included. Was he less impactful in 2019 than any others who were put ahead of him – Mason Mount, Phil Foden, Moise Kean and Matteo Guendouzi.
Most premier league players would not care and they are more hungry about winning matches, trophies, playing for boyhood clubs of their choice, qualification for premier tournaments in Europe etc. However, awards are a valuable recognition for the players and manager’s as well. Its not as diabolic as Van Dijk being put in awards behind Messi . But It’s clear that the likes of Guendouzi and Foden are getting recognition because of their clubs’ status and that is truly a shame. Premier League fans would like to wish best to Declan Rice and hope he continues to improve and let the talent receive its due recognition one day.
Liverpool owners value sporting director Michael Edwards ‘on par’ with Jurgen Klopp
It is nine years since Fenway Sports Group – then New England Sports Ventures – completed their purchase of Liverpool. While Jurgen Klopp has deservedly been the face of the club in managing it on pitch brilliantly. one man who deserves to receive credit and praise is backroom sporting director Michael Edwards for his work behind the scenes.
FSG president Mike Gordon believes Edwards has been integral in their journey and it is claimed he values the sporting director “on par” with manager Klopp. He said “The respect and value placed on Michael Edwards is almost impossible to quantify. In fact I’d go as far as to say it’s on a par with Jurgen Klopp”
With Liverpool on course at the moment to win its maiden English Premier League title, it is apparent for premier league fans that there is a great dynamics established between the club back room , owners and the playing staff ( managers and players ). A title for the merseyside club is long due and well deserved especially given the club’s heritage and contributions.
