Dimitar Berbatov tells Tottenham to stick with Mauricio Pochettino

Dimitar Berbatov has told Tottenham that they should stick with manager Mauricio Pochettino and overhaul the playing staff instead.Speculation is rife over whether Spurs will stick with the current manager or look for a replacement. Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been one name linked with the post as he continues to search for a new job. However Berbatov, who won two Premier League titles with Manchester United and played for Spurs between 2006 and 2008, insists that Spurs should change things on the pitch rather than the dugout.

Speaking to Betfair, the Bulgarian said: ‘I remember Sir Alex Ferguson telling us a team needs to be changed when four years passes, not the whole team but players. After four years some players start to get complacent and they aren’t challenged. They are in with the manager and they are comfortable, so a manager needs to shake things up and bring in new player.I was thinking that this could be the case with Spurs, a lot of the players have been there a long time. Maybe they need to shake things up and try to push the players in a way.'”

One of the advantages of playing with a winner is you learn trick of the trade and things which make you successful. Dimitar Berbatov had spent glorious years with Manchester United and probably one of the few who speak rarely to media.  Wise words from Berba…

3 great Premier League performers who are still underrated

Enda Stevens (Sheffield United) – So much attention has been given to Sheffield United’s overlapping centre-backs that their wing-backs – who actually do most of the running – have been largely overlooked. Stevens has particularly impressed in both defence (2.4 tackles per game, narrowly second among Blades players) and attack (2.3 dribbles per match, 13th-highest in the Premier League).

Gary Cahill (Crystal Palace) –  A serial Premier League winner with 61 England caps to his name is anything but an unknown entity.  Most onlookers thought that the ex-England stopper had been put out to pasture after a season without a single league start, and that a 33-year-old who was never blessed with pace would simply fade away.  Instead, Cahill is enjoying a rebirth at the heart of Palace’s defence. His leadership and organisational skills are playing a pivotal role in his team’s excellent start to the campaign, and he was named the south Londoners’ player of the month for September.

Emerson (Chelsea) – All the hype around Chelsea’s academy products has denied Emerson the credit he deserves for becoming a dependable left-back under Frank Lampard.  Lampard likes Emerson for his pace going forward. The Italian fits into the new manager’s gung-ho attacking tactics more neatly than the error-prone Marcus Alonso, and yet hasn’t looked as wild or disordered as his fellow Chelsea defenders.

Zaha defends Arsenal’s £72m man Pepe

Wilfried Zaha has come to the defense of Arsenal star Nicolas Pepe and says the club’s record signing ‘needs time’ as he adjusts to life in the Premier League. The Ivory Coast international has struggled to make an impact since his record-breaking £72m move to Arsenal this summer, scoring just one goal – from the penalty spot – since joining from French side Lille. Zaha said “You’ve got to give him time for him to reproduce the form that people saw to give him that high price tag, it’s not going to come like that.  have got nothing but faith in him, I’ve got confidence that he will produce the same thing that he did before.

Zaha and Pepe  both play for Ivory Coast and who else but a fellow player would know better on the talent of his peer.

Will the new Premier League chief protect the pyramid?

It is a topic which gained low-key announcement by Premier League standards, but English football’s top tier has finally appointed a successor to Richard Scudamore. Premier League Museum promises to give it’s fans more in depth of Premier League Chief  in it’s weekend podcast.

David Pemsel has come in as chief executive from the Guardian, aiming to steer the intergalactic Premier League through a meteor shower of problems threatening to knock it off course. Among the main issues in his inbox: The threat to the value of future TV deals from piracy; the inevitable move from anchored subscriptions of satellite dishes to mobile devices and clip culture. Brexit looms large for a league that resembles an international arrivals area. Also, there needs to be a repair job on the relationship with supporters after the excesses of the Scudamore era that saw the Football Supporters’ Federation protest outside Premier League HQ for two years straight over ticket prices.

But his biggest challenge will be keeping the football pyramid, 5000 clubs deep, intact. Without the Championship, Leagues One and Two and the network of other divisions that fill up the Non-League Paper with glorious snapshots of English sporting life, the Premier League would be just ‘The League’ and indistinct from any other.

Aston Villa won’t rest on our achievements

Dean Smith hopes the best is yet to come as he today celebrates one year in charge at Villa. The 48-year-old has enjoyed a superb first 12 months at the helm of the club he has supported since childhood, guiding Villa back to the Premier League through the play-offs in May.

Smith said: “You can’t not have the win at Wembley as the highlight of the year – leading Aston Villa out at Wembley. But we’re still building and we still want to get better. We don’t want to see that as the highlight. We want to keep going and move forward.”

Villa, who spent £127million on 12 new players during the summer transfer window, sit 15th in the table after eight matches.
