After finishing the previous year sixth in the table, Keegan was trying to turn his Newcastle side into a giant club in Europe. He had spent heavily in the summer and laid down an early marker by winning all four matches at the start of the new season. He became the first manager to win this award in every season since the awards were started, it was his fourth manager of the month award.
