Ryan Giggs was considered to be one of the brightest talents around the world but that did not mean he was going to have it easy at Old Trafford. After a surprise substitute duty against Everton a week earlier in the league, Alex Ferguson did not commit if Giggs was going to be starting in the league cup match against Leicester that week.

There was wide speculation about what was wrong with the Welshman and if there was tension between him and the manager. Ferguson confirmed that he would recall Bryan Robson, Brian McClair and Mike Phelan but when asked about Giggs, he wasn’t committal.
