Ronnie Whelan wanted a face to face showdown with Liverpool boss Graeme Souness after being dropped from Coca Cola cup tie against Fulham. Whelan had borne the brunt of Souness’ frustration after a dreadful performance against Everton in the Mersey derby a week earlier. Also for the chop were Steve Nicol, Steve McManaman, Mark Walters and Ronnie Rosenthal. Whelan was at the time on a week to week contract at Anfield after failing to negotiate a more permanent offer with Souness earlier that summer.

Ronnie Whelan said “I’ll be looking to meet with the manager in the next few days. That meeting will probably take place on Thursday. I am not injured and I’ve got nothing to say other than that. You’d better ask the manager about all this.”
