Leeds United’s 17-month wait for an away win finally ended at Southampton with goals from Brian Deane and injury-time clincher by Gary Speed. Saints’ Dutch defender Ken Monkou as taken to hospital with a clash of heads with Deane and the reshuffle caused chaos in the home defence.

After 51 minutes Gordon Strachan and David Batty Combined on the left and crossed for Deane to glance a header past Flowers and into the top corner. Strachan ran endlessly and he set up the second for Speed when he pulled the ball in the dying minutes and Speed netted to put the result beyond doubt.
