Sheffield United 1 – Ipswich Town 1 – Former Wednesday man Steve Whitton salvages a point against Old Rivals
Former Sheffield Wednesday striker Steve Whitton had the last word snatching an equaliser with only seconds to go. United looked to be heading for their third successive home win when substitute Simon Milton found space on the right. He pumped the ball over to the far post where Whitton finished off, heading past Alan Kelly from eight yards out.
Dave Bassett’s side had started brightly with youngster Dane Whitehouse hitting a low drive only inches wide of the mark in the second minute. Whitton almost broke the deadlock. rising to connect with a Frank Yallop cross, but his firm header was palmed over the top by Kelly. United took the lead in the 25th minute, Norwegian international Jostein Flo grabbing his second goal in four days since his £400,000 move.
Full-back Kevin Gage set up the goal with a centre from the right and when Andy Scott’s header was blocked by keeper Craig Forrest, the 6ft 4ins striker finished off from close range. Whitton was the hero in the 67th minute, spectacularly clearing a Wirmola header from under his own bar, and capped an impressive display with his last ditch equaliser.
Arsenal 2 – Everton 0 – Ian Wight gets Arsenal their fourth win of the season against the Toffees
Two-goal Ian Wright made it four wins in a row for Arsenal as Everton’s early-season promise suffered another blow at Highbury. Wright took his tally for the season to four and gave the Gunners the lead in the 48th minute in a move that was started by a longball from the goalkeeper Seaman. Kevin Campbell headed it on clear of back four and Wright beat Neville Southall easily.
He scored an exquisite second goal with just 12 minutes to go when once again a David Seaman longball was latched by Wright and dribbled past Matt Jackson before scoring the goal and securing all three points for the home team.
Southampton 1 – Manchester United 3 – Sublime Cantona leaves Alex Ferguson speechless
Alex Ferguson unveiled the French connection part 2 at the Dell as Champions Manchester United strengthened their grip on the premiership. The return of Eric Cantona brought the best out of United on the day, his back heel for Denis Irwin was a sublime piece of football and got finished off by Irwin’s pinpoint left-wing cross and converted into the goal by Lee Sharpe.
Le Tissier equalized for the home team in the 13th minute but a rare mistake from Jeff Kenna allowed Cantona to chip the keeper four minutes later and restore the lead for the visitors. Cantona provided the assist for the third goal as he created for a rare goal for Irwin in the second half.
Alex Ferguson said “I called Ryan Giggs to one side at half time in the dressing room and told him to study our second goal from Cantona. It was perfection in itself and that every young footballer should try to aspire to.”
Oldham Athletic 1 – Wimbledon 1 – Vinnie gamble pays off for Joe Kinnear
Joe Kinnear took a gamble on Vinnie Jones and it worked a treat. The 28-year-old hardman marked his first appearance of the season after a knee injury and a ban with the equalizer. Jones was up to all his old tricks, giving Neil Pointon an ear bashing for wearing white gloves as well as having a dust-up with sub-Daren Beckford.
Joe Kinnear said “Vinnie looked fit and sharp and took his goal well. It was a late decision to play him as I hadn’t seen him for two weeks while receiving treatment. It was purely a gut feeling.”
Joe Royle said “Vinnie makes me smile. Wimbledon put you under pressure and are at their most dangerous when the ball is out of play. You have to look at their work at corners, free kicks and throws.”
Pointon set up Oldham’s opening goal after six minutes, he put in a cross in the box that was converted by Paul Bernard who only needed to tap in.
