Manchester City chairman Peter Swales decided that it was time up for struggling manager Peter Reid and sacked him from the job after three defeats in a row and put City legend Tony Book in charge on an interim basis. That was the fifth time, Book was the manager at City after doing it on a permanent basis between 1974 – 1979 and three other occasions on caretaking capacity.

Despite the sacking, Reid refused to be bitter about the situation whilst he still had three years left on his contract.

Peter Reid said “I hope everyone gets behind the players and the new manager whoever it may be. It is a great club, I had a good time there and I wish them all the best. These things happen, its part and parcel of the game of football and I just have to get on with it.”
