Liverpool 1 – Tottenham 2 – Teddy too much to bear for Graeme Souness’ Men
Teddy Sheringham’s double-barreled blast fired Spurs to only their third win in 48 league trips to Anfield. Liverpool’s 100% start was swept away in another feast of glorious football on a day when goals were flying around the country. Graeme Souness’ side looked on their way to fourth straight win when Nigel Clough delivered his fourth goal in as many games since his £2.2 million signings.
But his old Nottingham Forest colleague Sheringham levelled Spurs in the 30th minute via a penalty before putting the visitors in front just before the half time. This happened just after Rob Jones went close to restoring Liverpool’s lead from 30 yards out. The result meant that Liverpool would not be the outright leaders that week in the premier league table.
West Ham United 2 – Sheffield Wednesday 0 – Hammers win at Upton Park as news for player contracts emerge
West Ham’s early season form was worrying but they finally broke their duck against a struggling Sheffield Wednesday and Clive Allen got on the score sheet twice to send the West Ham faithful in joy. Wednesday’s record £2.75 million signing, Andy Sinton still did not have a goal to his name as manager Francis was coming under increasing pressure.
Meanwhile, West Ham had made new contract offers to rebel stars Tim Breacker and Ian Bishop and manager Billy Bonds confirmed that the club wanted to keep the players despite the rumours that Southampton had inquired for both the players.
Billy Bonds said “We will do everything we can to keep both of them.”
Ian Bishop said “We are talking about the deal, my loyalties are here.”
Newcastle United 1 – Everton 0 – Magpies Pick up first win of the season
It was not a great day for the blue half of Merseyside either as Newcastle United picked up their first win of the season by beating Everton thanks to Malcolm Allen’s 18th-minute winner that was deflected past a helpless Neville Southall by his own central defender, Matthew Jackson.
The Newcastle supporters in the 34833 crowd were fully aware that Everton had played their full part in a real blood and thunder game. Tony Cottee blew away many chances at the start to give Everton the lead and preserve their 100% start to the season. He had chances to equalize and even win the game in both halves of the game.
But the same was the case for Newcastle as well, with Everton leaving gaps at the back, the pace of Andy Cole twice took him clear in the dying minutes, but on both occasions, Southall denied him the goal that he promised his manager to deliver against Everton.
Southampton 5 – Swindon Town 1 – Saints swipe the floor with Swindon Le Tissier Scores Twice
England ‘B’ international Matthew Le Tissier struck twice to lead Southampton to their first win of the premier league season and heap more misery on new boys Swindon. John Gorman’s fragile Swindon had conceded 14 goals in their first four games in the top flight and was ruthlessly swept aside by Saints.
There were already talks about how Swindon could potentially be going down that season but the win was extremely crucial for Southampton who had played well that season without getting the rub of the green going their way.
