Aston Villa’s star signing of the summer Andy Townsend was set to be out for a significant time as his hamstring injury was thought to be more serious then what was originally diagnosed. The £2.1 million republic of Ireland star had moved from Chelsea to midlands that summer but limped out of Villa’s goalless draw against Sheffield Wednesday with a hamstring injury.

If Townsend was ruled out that would give chance for Gordon Cowans to become Villa captain in his third spell at the club.

Ron Atkinson said, “We are not sure whether it’s a tear or a pull but its certainly not what we wanted.”
