Manager Bobby Gould was under pressure after an underwhelming season where the Highfield Road side flirted with relegation for the best part of the campaign. Despite the lack of funds, Coventry saw a huge exodus of players and brought in a number of first-team players as well to freshen up the squad.

Mick Harford, Paul Williams, Julian Darby, Steve Morgan and John Gayle all left for championship clubs whereas Andy Pearce from Sheffield Wednesday and Kevin Gallacher from Blackburn were the two big signings along with many lower league free transfers.

Gould had already accepted the fact that the club would have to rely on academy players and clever deals to survive in the league due to the financial crisis as another season of relegation scrap awaited the Sky Blues.
