Arsenal 3 – Crystal Palace 0 – Ian Wright’s goal relegated his old side
Ian Wright was a prodigy at Crystal Palace and the Eagles fans sang out his name every time he stepped on the pitch. But his goal in the ninth minute started the downfall of Palace. Wright was quick to pounce on the through ball by Paul Merson and finished calmly to put his side ahead.
Further goals by Dickov and Campbell had left Palace hanging on to the thread of a favour by Southampton who had to draw or win against Oldham in order for Palace to stay up. But an Oldham’s remarkable form continued as they won 4-3 against the Saints and even two late goals from Southampton weren’t enough to save the South London side.
Oldham 4 – Southampton 3 – Latics survived in dramatic fashion
Oldham Athletic completed the most remarkable relegation escape act of many seasons after desperately hanging on to beat Southampton 4-3 to secure their premier league future. Despite two late goals and a hat trick by Matt Le Tissier, Oldham kept their nerve in the final minutes. They already knew that Crystal Palace was losing to Arsenal at high bury in what was a nerve-wracking finish in the end.
Oldham looked down and out at one point of time that season but had shown remarkable composure and guts to beat the drop on goal difference in the end. They won their last three matches on the bounce to pick up nine points and were tied on 49 points with Crystal Palace. But they had a better goal difference by two goals which eventually made all the difference.
Liverpool 6 – Tottenham Hotspur 2 – Souness Absent as Goals Galore at Anfield
Liverpool produced one of their best performances at Anfield and manager Graeme Souness, whose future had been the subject media speculation wasn’t at the ground to witness the performance. The reason given was that he was at Coventry to scout for a player.
But the side that went out on the pitch had many players that weren’t the first choice for the under-pressure manager and their performances showed that may be selected and other duties had already been taken away from the manager. One such player was Bruce Grobbelaar, who got back into the side and was on fire with his performance, on and off the pitch.
Bruce Grobbelaar said “Everyone knows that I’ll never get another chance at this club as long as a certain person remains.”
Ipswich Town 2 – Nottingham Forest 0 – Ipswich Stay Up as Brian Clough says goodbye
Ipswich needed a point to be assured of avoiding relegation but instead got full points against luckless Nottingham Forest at Portman Road and the visitors ended Brian Clough’s reign as the manager at the bottom of the premier league.
Simon Milton and Steve Whitton scored each to give Ipswich their goals whereas fittingly Brian Clough’s son, Nigel Clough scored the last goal of his father’s reign at the club. Despite the loss, Clough senior was given a hero’s farewell as the whole stadium gave him standing ovation before and after the match.
Inside the dressing room, Ipswich general manager John Lyall presented Clough with a silver salver on behalf of the club.
