Anything but a win for Aston Villa and the 26-year-old wait for Manchester United to win the premier league would be all but confirmed. United was four points clear of Villa with a vastly superior goal difference. If Villa failed to get all three points against Oldham, United’s remaining two matches would be just a mere formality.

But regardless of the result, Manchester United would want to seal the title in style at home against Blackburn Rovers. Despite all the hopefulness of Ron Atkinson about his Aston Villa’s chances of fighting for the title, he did admit that the day Manchester United win the title the atmosphere at Old Trafford would be special. Atkinson was the manager at Old Trafford that was replaced by Alex Ferguson and he remembered the famous 1984 match when United overturned a 2-0 deficit to Barcelona.

Ron Atkinson said “People talk about that Barcelona night as special, and when they could get 60000 fans into the ground in the 1960s it must have been quite the cauldron. But Monday night could surpass all that.”
