Alex Ferguson was ready to break the bank to ensure that he gets the best players in his team to successfully defend his title and was keen to make a move for Nottingham Forest’s Roy Keane as soon as the final ball of the season was kicked. Ferguson’s shopping list contained two names, Roy Keane of Forest and David Hirst of Sheffield Wednesday and he was ready to spend mouth-watering £8 million to get his targets.
Keane had an upper ceiling of £3 million if he was sold to another English club and the Manchester United manager wanted to be the first in line as he saw the Cork-born midfielder as the long term successor to Bryan Robson. With Brian Clough calling it a day, it would be tough for Keane and Forest to refuse a substantial offer from a big club and Manchester United wanted to be ahead of Blackburn Rovers and Arsenal to get the deal over the line.
