#PLHistory #premierleaguestories #PL on April 28 1993 – You need to have tough skin to manage a football club said Oldham boss #JoeRoyle

Joe Royle

As reports of drinking problem and depression came to light with regards to Brian Clough’s decision to quit Nottingham Forest, fellow premier league manager from Oldham, Joe Royle opened up about the pressure of managing at the top level and the need to have “thick skin” to survive.

Joe Royle said “We have a high mortality rate. About 30% managers lose their jobs each season. Football management is not for faint hearted. You need a thick skin, durability and the ability to switch off to survive. No one in the world likes criticism, the public is very very hard. But it has to be good here at Oldham. I think this place is a little different to others. There has never been a time when I have though about packing football management in.”
