Arsenal striker Ian Wright’s season had come to a premature end after he got injured in the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest that week. Earlier it was thought that his toe injury was just a bruise but x rays revealed a fracture which meant that he would miss the last two matches of the season for Arsenal in the premier league but crucially would miss their FA cup final as well as England’s crucial world cup qualifier against Holland.

England was already struggling after Alan Shearer had been ruled out their matches in April and May against Holland, Poland and Norway. Teddy Sheringham of Tottenham Hotspur was set to take Wright’s place in England line up.
