Ronnie Whelan, a 12 season stalwart at Liverpool, confirmed that day that he won’t “hang about” at Anfield if he fails to agree terms for the next season soon. The Republic of Ireland was locked in a dispute with the club over the terms of a new one year contract. Apparently Whelan wanted a longer contract with better wages but the Reds had only offered him a one year deal with same wages as he present deal.

Ronnie Whelan said “I am not satisfied with the terms. And if the clubs don’t make an offer which I consider acceptable, I won’t hang around. I will be talking to the club soon but I have an open mind now about where my future lies. I have played nine games in a row with no problems now, so the talk of my injury issues are also overplayed.”
