Everton manager Howard Kendall said that even though his team was practically safe from relegation that season, his players still had a big point to prove to him before the end of the season if they wanted to continue staying at Goodisson for the next season. Everton had been up and down for the whole season and despite having sufficient cushion between them and the relegation fight, their perfomances had been poor.

Howard Kendall said “The players here have to convince me that they deserve to be in a more successful Everton team. You are looking at next season and that itself is enough reason to fight. The result on Monday hurt and I am looking for a reaction, the way we lost the match was unacceptable.”
