Manchester United 2 Sheffield Wednesday – Steve Bruce Inspired Red Devils Back in Title Hunt
With four minutes to go for in the game and United chasing the game, it looked like the title was once again not going to come to the Old Trafford and the 26-year-old wait was set to continue. But two goals by their captain Steve Bruce took them back to the top of the premier league as Aston Villa were held at home.
Wednesday had gone ahead against the run of play in the 64th minute and despite dominating the whole game Paul Ince and Mark Hughes were struggling to get the goal before Bruce came to the party.
Alex Ferguson said “We have come over a massive hurdle today. Because our record against Sheffield Wednesday is crap, they were the last team we wanted to play today. But anyone playing against us has got to go to the wire, because we’ll not give up.”
Steve Bruce said “It is the longest I have ever gone in my career without scoring. My last goal was away against Middlesborough last October and that was a penalty. It has been a long time and it was long overdue, but it all came right today. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

Aston Villa 0 Coventry City 0 – Villa Spurned the chance to stay ahead & may be the title
Aston Villa suffered a setback to their premier league title hopes during 20 emotional minutes at Villa park. As they battered in vain at a resilient Coventry, the fans began to celebrate the news that Sheffield Wednesday had taken the lead against rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.
But in the end United’s fightback had cost them dear and left them a point adrift with five games to play. Afterwards, Ron Atkinson showed that the title strain was getting to him. The Villa boss sparked an angry exchange with a journalist when asked what disappointment him most about the performance.
Ron Atikinson said “We didn’t score and its inane questions like that particularly irritate me. We’ve run the game from start to finish. They’ve defended very staunchly. It’s a local derby and they had pride to play for. But we should have won.”
Ipswich 1 Arsenal 2 – Merson Goal Sinked Ipswich
Ipswich’s dismal run of 11 games without a win continued at portman road when Arsenal came from behind to win. Arsenal had left Ian Wright on the bench and kept missing easy opportunities to kill off the game. Ipswich were scored their only goal via a penalty and also had the chance to get a point off the game but David Seaman, the Arsenal keeper moved correctly to save the penalty.
Arsenal had lost their previous match after winning a historic semifinal against their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley. But they were back to the winning ways and boosted their chances of qualifying for Europe the next season.
Southampton 1 Chelsea 0 – Goal Present for Saints as Banger grabbed all three points
A mistake by Chelsea’s former England goalkeeper Dave Beasant ended their resurgence under David Webb and almost ensured Southampton’s premier league survival. Beasant was nearly kicked out of Stamford bridge for his errors earlier in the season, could not hold a head high shot from Dowie and youngster Banger touched in his sixth goal of the season after 49 minutes.
A minute late a swirling corner from le Tissier was met by Chelsea old boy Monkou but Beasant did well to hold the ball at the foot of the post. Early in the second half Saints again threatened to over run Chelsea and after Banger had put them ahead he could easily have scored a second.
