Reds boss Graeme Souness spoke for the first time about the widely reported rift between himself and Bruce Grobbelaar. While Grobbelaar jetted off to Africa for Zimbabwe’s international match with Zambia his club boss broke his silence over a situation which could have resulted in a summer move away from Anfield for the goalkeeper. Though Souness did not comment on the player’s future he did explain the reason for dropping him.

Graeme Souness said “At the start of the season I told him that he was the number one keeper until he played himself out of it, despite the fact that we did sign a new keeper. But before one particular game when there were a few Zimbabwe matches coming up, he told me that the most important thing was to stay here and be number one. He told me he wouldn’t be travelling and then the next day I came to know that he had flown out. I knew I couldn’t rely on him anymore. That is why I am going with David James now.”
