Liverpool legend John Aldridge said that even though he rated Southend Stan Collymore highly, he was surprised to see Forest bidding £1.75 million for him and Southend turning it down. He also questioned Everton manager Howard Kendall’s use of Tonny Cottee.

John Aldridge said “Collymore’s a promising forward but nothing more than that just yet. Cloughie’s bid smacked of a panic buy. He missed out on Alan Shearer and missed out on Dean Saunders last summer and he was desperate to not miss out on another goal-scoring talent. There is a shortage of skilful centre forwards these days, every goal scorer you see now are six foot two and powerful – in the Les Ferdinand mode. Look at Cottee, he has scored goals for Everton but Howard Kendall wants more than just goals from him. Work rate, strength and athleticism is often more important now, no one wants an out and out goal scorer now.
