Coventry 0 Everton 1

A spectacular volley from Mark Ward eased relegation fears for Everton. Ward, playing his second game since breaking his leg six months earlier clinched victory in the eighth minute. Everton was grateful to goalkeeper Neville Southall, who made good first-half saves from Mick Quinn and Nick Gynn.

The result lifts Everton three places in the table and sat 17th in the table, above Liverpool.
