Leeds had a cause to thank referee Ken Redfern if they managed to avoid the awful prospect of becoming the first side ever to get relegated immediately after winning the top division league. An astonishing division by the referee robbed the Gunners’ goal master Ian Wright a first-minute winner. Television evidence showed that the official was wrong to rule Wright had tripped defender John Lukic. If anything, Fairclough had fallen over his own feet.

But Leeds lost their captain Gary McAllister for six weeks with a hairline fracture as the price for their point.
