Kevin Keegan was the favorite front runner for the biggest job in football, should Graeme Souness had to walk the plank at Anfield. And, while Newcastle fans would see that as a betrayal considering they were just about to get promoted in the premier league, Keegan was apparently very keen on the move.

Liverpool’s humiliating exit from the FA cup was the last straw for many fans. Souness’s decision to let Peter Beardsley go to Everton for £1 million was greeted with disbelief. Fans still found it hard to forgive him for selling the Republic of Ireland duo Steve Staunton and Ray Houghton and goal ace Dean Saunders to Villa.
