Bruce Grobbelaar was unhappy by the goalkeeping selection his boss Graeme Souness was making. Graeme Souness had already announced that third choice keeper Mike Hooper was set to keep his place in the starting eleven, “Mike Hooper will play and will continue to be in the team until he plays himself out.”

Grobbelaar was set to watch from the stands after making an 8000-mile flight from Angola where he was on world cup duty with Zimbabwe.

Bruce Grobbelaar said “You don’t come back 8000 miles to sit around and twiddle your thumbs – especially when you’ve got a £1.2 million goalkeeper (David James) also available”
