Referee Roger Milford was at the centre of controversy as goals by Matthew Jackson and Peter Beardsley eased Everton’s relegation fears. Unhappy Everton manager Howard Kendall walked off at half time deep in conversation with the official, who failed to show goalkeeper Nigel Martyn a red card after he chopped down Beardsley in the 41st minute. But two second-half goals gave all three points to ease some pressure on the Merseyside outfit. The physical effort required in the coca-cola cup match against Chelsea appeared to have taken a toll on the Palace side as their energy levels dropped significantly in the second half of that game
