Les Ferdinand of QPR was set to be the first big-money transfer of the new year as Graeme Souness and Kevin Keegan prepared to enter a big-money auction for the striker. Keegan fired his first salvo on Christmas Eve, lodging a £3.3 million bid which was rejected by Gerry Francis. But Souness was prepared to off load several of his big players to offer a cash plus player deal for the South London club. Michael Thomas, Paul Stewart and Mark Wright were all names that were doing the rounds to head to Loftus Road.
