• Blackburn Rovers 3 Leeds United 1 – Shearer Goals Sink Champions

Champions Leeds staggered around Ewood Park hellbent on self-destruction – and succeeded. They conceded two goals when their offside trap fell apart and finished well beaten, as England striker Alan Shearer netted twice to take his season’s haul to 22.


Coventry City 3 Aston Villa 0 – Mick Quinn Deals Villa a huge blow in the title challenge

Mick Quinn took his amazing scoring run to 10 goals in just six games as Coventry continued their recent form by overturning title challengers Aston Villa. The 24245 strong crowd gave Quinn an ovation as he limped off in the final minute after he scored two goals.


Everton 2 Middlesborough 2 – Investment worth it for Boro in Hignett

Craig Hignett repaid a large part of his £500000 transfer fees with the two goals which earned Boro a deserved draw in a thriller. Rejected by Liverpool as a youngster, Hignett had been a prolific scorer in third division before making a move up north. Middlesborough manager Lennie Lawrence described the game as a dream for specators but a nightmare for the managers.

Sheffield Wednesday 3 Manchester United 3 – Cantona Caps Great Comeback

Manchester United staged one of their most remarkable fightbacks after they rescued a point with three dramatic second-half goals. The man that Alex Ferguson tried to sign, David Hirst gave Wednesday the lead in 2nd minute, United’s come back started in 67th minute when they were 3-0 down as two goals from Brian Mclair and the 84th-minute strike from Cantona rescued a point.


• Manchester City 2 Sheffield United 0 – White Christmas at Man City

Manchester City’s top gate of the season, 27455, saw their side celebrate a truly white Christmas as striker David White struck with goals in the 20th and 55th minute to give his side a first win in a month against struggling Sheffield United.
