Ian Rush revealed that day that the gift which would bring him a merry Christmas was the number nine shirt. Rush was speaking to the media amidst speculation that he may not find a place in the team after Liverpool’s 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Coventry. Graeme Souness was set to make changes with Rush, Paul Stewart and Mark Wright possible victims. Rush said “When you are losing, people put strikers under pressure for not scoring. Never since I’ve been at Liverpool have I taken my place for granted. I always give 100 per cent and I continue to do so.”
