Manchester City was set to welcome Glasgow Celtic striker, Tommy Coyne in a £50000 deal. City was initially only prepared to pay half of the asking price but the reports were emerging that they would be willing to splash the cash to secure their target. The city believed that a Coyne-Niall Quinn strike force will add a cutting edge to their premier division challenge. The Citizens wanted to sign Coyne at the start of the season but Coyne broke his arm in September. He had just returned to full fitness after a 13-week absence.
