Peter Beardsley, the £1 million Anfield reject and Mo Johnston, the man who broke the mould at Ibrox, both came back to haunt their old boss at Goodison Park as under-pressure Everton came back from behind to score a huge derby victory over Liverpool.

Everton boss Howard Kendall revealed that chants of “Going down” from Liverpool supporters were one of the big factors in his player’s putting in a better performance in the Merseyside derby. Everton went behind in the match as away fans became more and more vocal. Kendall said “Never mind the instructions you can try and pass on from the dugout. That chant definitely motivated the players more than anything I could have shouted. We mustn’t get carried away, I glanced at the league table today morning and it brings you straight back down to earth with a game coming up against Sheffield United.”
