Premier League Set for a £30 million windfall from a new television rights deal

The premier league was set for a £30 million-plus windfall if negotiations to sell television rights worldwide were concluded that week. Rick Parry, the premier league’s chief executive, was close to concluding a four-year deal that could bring the league more than £30 million, meaning more than £300000 each in phased payments to member clubs. The new deal, if completed, was to be presented to representatives of six premier league clubs the following Thursday for initial examination before it was ratified by the full membership. Three months earlier Crystal Palace and Chelsea chairmen led a 7 club walkout after eight clubs blocked a proposed Bass Sponsorship deal.

Townsend Helps Chelsea Pile More Misery on Leeds with a late winner

In the only match of the day in the premier league, Andy Townsend stole a dramatic late victory for Chelsea to rocket them into fifth place in the English Premier League – and further question Leeds’ decision to sell Eric Cantona. The defending champions dominated the clash at Stamford Bridge but squandered their chances. With three minutes remaining, they were stunned when the Republic of Ireland and Chelsea captain thundered in the only goal. It was Leeds’ sixth defeat in nine games and hardly enhanced Wilkinson’s decision to say au revoir to his charismatic French Striker.

Not Good Enough & Beyond Belief: Middlesborough Manager Lennie Lawrence after his side’s heavy defeat against Oldham

Middlesborough boss Lennie Lawrence had stressed that there was still cash in the kitty to shore up his struggling team. There may be more than £50000 available to make a further transfer splash. But Lawrence, who “celebrated” 10 years in management by witnessing Boro’s crushing defeat at Oldham on Saturday, admitted that his main worry was solving the immediate team problems first. He said “If Saturday’s performance at Oldham was the best that certain players can do, then they are not good enough. That’s the sixth time this season that we have surrendered the lead and its beyond belief.”

Ian Branfoot sympathetic for Forest boss Brian Clough after Saint grab all three points in a lucky victory

Ian Branfoot was the latest manager to try to cheer Brian Clough after Southampton’s smash and grab a 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground. The Saint’s boss admitted his side had “lived on the edge” as Forest threatened to end their season-long frustrations with a convincing win. He said “We defended extremely well and it was a case of having to. Its not going for Forest at the moment but if they are patient and retain their composure, they will sort themselves out.”
