Manchester City’s Terry Phelan talked about his time at Wimbledon & being on the verge of quitting football

Terry Phelan opened up about his last few months at Wimbledon which almost see him quit the game. His contract was up, Phelan sought to move back North and there seemed to be many suitors for him too. But Wimbledon priced him too high and then grew very secretive in their dealings with other clubs. Phelan clashed with the club owner Sam Hammam and was eventually sold to Manchester City for £2.2 million, a player that original cost Wimbledon just £90000. He recalled the time and said “My last days there were terrible. It was an awful time. I eventually became so unhappy that I didn’t want to play football anymore.”

Premier League stars on International Duty

Former Manchester United and then Aston Villa player Paul Mcgrath was aiming to make a tough life for Spain in their international fixture in Seville. The Republic of Ireland player was set to play his 57th cap for the country and was just about to turn 33 in a month’s time but he had no plans to hang his boots.

Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was set to win his 57th cap as well for Denmark and as he celebrated his 29th birthday and he wanted to beat Northern Ireland in their clash at Belfast to celebrate the same. He had earlier admitted that the high of winning the Euros with Denmark earlier that year was partly the reason his focus was off at the start of the season both with the club and country.

His teammate at Manchester United, Ryan Giggs was set to find a place on the bench for Wales’ upcoming international match as Wales manager Terry Yorath was set to keep an unchanged side against Belgium.

Neil Webb set to Rejoin Nottingham Forest from Manchester United

Neil Webb was set to return to Nottingham Forest from Manchester United whose manager Alex Ferguson was prepared to take half of the £1.5 million he paid for the midfielder in 1989. The player never really settled into life in the Northwest and could not establish himself as a regular starter for the red devils. As Forest manager looked to turn their beleaguered season around, Webb could be a key figure as someone who had played at the club before and could turn the fans back to the manager’s side.
