Middlesbrough striker Bernie Slaven hopeful of a move to Sunderland

[hr]

Unsettled Middlesborough striker Bernie Slaven announced that he was interested in a move to Sunderland. It was reported in previous days that he had put in a transfer request and manager Lennie Lawrence had promised to “bend over backward” to facilitate a move for the striker. But the news of the Republic of Ireland International wanting to move away to a championship side had come as a surprise. Slaven had scored 146 goals for the Teesside outfit and the Glasgow born player said “I know the North East well and if the move to Sunderland, there would be no settling in period. They play football and that would suit me down to the ground.”

Brian Clough defies the odds and gets a 1-year extension at Nottingham Forest

[hr]

Brian Clough defied the odds when the English Premier League basement club Nottingham Forest handed him a one-year contract extension. The veteran and legend manager had been under immense pressure with an extremely poor start to the season for Forest. Forests was bottom of the league table and player discontent as well as crowd’s dissatisfaction with the team meant that rumors of Clough leaving were heightened. Star player Roy Keane also had doubts about extending his contract and Clough was considered to be the favorite to be the first manager sacked that season.

Leeds star Gordon Strachan denies swearing at official before the game against Watford

[hr]

Gordon Strachan had denied swearing at a senior police officer before Leeds United’s midweek coca-cola cup defeat at Watford. The incident allegedly took place when the inspector went to the Leeds dressing room to announce that the kick-off was to be delayed for 15 minutes due to crowd safety reasons. Leeds boss Howard Wilkinson backed Strachan and said: “No abusive remarks were directed at the police officer and if he overheard anything, he simply heard the reaction of grown men disappointed about the kick-off delay.”
