Stig Inge Bjornbye returned home to Norway with his proposed move to Liverpool on hold. Graeme Souness’ hoped of a completing a quick deal had been hit because the stylish defender needed a work permit – and that could take anything between two and six weeks. The reason for the delay was because his country was not a member of the EEC but Bjornbye, who played for Norwegian champions Rosenborg, wold return to Anfield to complete the formalities once the work permit was sorted out.

Nottingham Forest boss Brian Clough was convinced that his uneasy relationship with the FA may have cost his son Nigel Clough a host of England caps. Clough senior felt that his abrasive temperament and outspoken style may have been to blame for his son only playing eight times for the three lions in the previous three years. He said, “I am not a bitter man, but I genuinely feel that over the years my feelings towards the FA have stopped a little bit of progress for my son.”
