David Hirst was top of Alex Ferguson’s hit list and the Manchester United boss was ready to smash the British transfer record and splash out £4 million to bring the Sheffield Wednesday star to Old Trafford. Wednesday boss Trevor Francis had already rejected United’s first approach. Francis had told Ferguson that his star striker was not for sale – unless the United manager made him an offer he could not refuse. Ferguson, with only six goals to show from United’s previous 12 games had £5 million available to him but would be reluctant to blow it on a single signing.
