Major Headlines

  • Could Sheffield Wednesday’s David Hirst be Manchester United’s new striker

  • Chelsea confirmed price for their new goalkeeper Dimitri Kharin

  • Potential signing at the Anfield – Stig Inge Bjornebye

  •  Leeds pulled David Batty and Tony Dorigo out of international duties due to injuries.

David Hirst was top of Alex Ferguson’s hit list and the Manchester United boss was ready to smash the British transfer record and splash out £4 million to bring the Sheffield Wednesday star to Old Trafford. Wednesday boss Trevor Francis had already rejected United’s first approach. Francis had told Ferguson that his star striker was not for sale – unless the United manager made him an offer he could not refuse. Ferguson, with only six goals to show from United’s previous 12 games had £5 million available to him but would be reluctant to blow it on a single signing.

Leeds United manager Howard Wilkinson was on the point of pulling injured David Batty and Tony Dorigo out of the England squad after they were forced to miss the crumbling champions’ latest humiliation – the Coca Cola Cup knockout by first division Watford. Midfield Gary Speed may also be doubtful for Wales after taking a bang in the head in the same game.

Liverpool expected to clinch the £50000 signing of Norwegian international Stig Inge Bjornebye within the next 48 hours. The 23-year-old defender had been on a ten-day trial at Anfield and Liverpool manager Graeme Souness had also watched the stylish left-sided defender in international and club football for Rosenborg.

Meanwhile, Chelsea confirmed the fee they had paid for the Russian Goalkeeper Dimitri Kharis which was £20000. An extra £20000 was to be paid according to how many appearances he made for the blues. The goalkeeper was signed after many high profile mistakes from their previous goalkeeper Dave Beasant.
