Premier League Museum

In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are reviving some of the moments from past which will restore golden history of the best league in the world.

Friday papers in the UK covered the upcoming set of premier league matches where two in-form sides in Middlesborough and Liverpool were meeting to get into the top half, Arsenal were hoping for favors from Spurs to go top of the table and a must-win match for Nottingham Forest and Everton as the jobs of their managers were on line in the bottom of the table clash.

11th placed Middlesborough were set to take on 14th placed Liverpool in a match where a draw served neither of the teams any purpose. Middlesborough had sprung many surprises that season with their fast counter-attacking style. A week prior to the match they held on to a score draw against Norwich. They were the fourth-highest goal scorers that year but their leaky defense was going to be tested by a Liverpool side who also had seen their fortunes swing upwards since the previous international break.

Arsenal was banking on arch North London rivals Tottenham to do them a favor by beating Blackburn Rovers that week. An away victory for Spurs and a victory for the Gunners would have meant that Arsenal would go top of the premier league table first time that season. But one man standing in their way was Peter Ndlovu from Coventry. The tricky winger had scored give spectacular goals in 10 matches that season. The 19-year-old Zimbabwe player had also scored against Arsenal a year ago where he came in as a late substitute in Coventry’s shock victory at Highbury a year ago.

Manchester City was hoping to continue the newfound form that had allowed them to climb up the premier league table as they were fifth in the table. They faced defending champions Leeds in their upcoming games and had a chance to go four games on the trot without changing their line ups. Michael Vonk had recovered from an ankle injury which had kept him out of the previous nine games but was only likely to be good enough for the bench in that game.

Premier league’s two most out of form teams Nottingham Forest and Everton were set to clash with each other in a match that could see one of their managers get the sack should the other side inflict a heavy defeat on them. Forest was bottom of the table under their legendary manager Brian Clough whereas Howard Kendall’s Everton looked out of ideas and energy throughout that season and discontent amongst the fans was extremely high at that point.
