In a piece of rare good news for Howard Kendall, the Everton boss had a fully fit squad to choose from for his upcoming match against fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest. The only player that could miss out was striker Tony Cottee who did play against Manchester City but for an outburst reported in all the papers after the match that led to disciplinary actions. Kendall downplayed the incident and said, “That incident is now closed, Tony is back in contention.”

Queen’s Park Rangers’ Led Ferdinand had been the big surprise in England’s squad for the world cup qualifier against Turkey at Wembley in a week’s time. The forward had been called into the senior party for the first time after one previous summons as a standby player. The 26-year-old’s ability to run with the ball and poach goals had been on the major factors behind QPR’s impressive start to the campaign and got him a call up to three lions.

The resurgence of Steve Staunton was the story of the season at Villa Park. In his second stint at the club, Staunton was committed to the Villa project that was coming together under Ron Atkinson and was hoping that he would be up there battling with the best of the best in May “People look at us and say we’re a good team. Most observers would look at Arsenal as title favorites. Just watch where we are next May.” He said brimming with confidence. Villa had finished seventh in the table in the previous season and had added likes of Paul Mcgrath and Dean Saunders to the team that had given them an extra lift that season.

Villa’s next opponents, Manchester United skipper Bryan Robson was also set to start his first game that season. Robson had been out with a hamstring injury, played the last 20 minutes against Wimbledon a week ago. Robson’s presence could be the boost United needed to restore their sagging confidence after only one win in their previous 11 games. Lee Sharpe had also recovered from viral meningitis and was expected to be in the 15 man squad.
