In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are reviving some of the moments from past which will restore golden history of the best league in the world.
Monday papers in the UK covered the only match played in the Premier League in Sunday where Aston Villa beat Queens Park Rangers 2-0, the fans had started to turn against Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough after 18 long years at the club, Everton chairman Dr. David Marsh admitted that the club was struggling for cash and Trevor Francis, the Sheffield Wednesday manager admitted that Blackburn Rovers were favorites to win the first-ever Premier league.
Deadly duo Dean Saunders and Dalian Atkinson combined to fire Aston Villa to a 2-0 victory and beat Queens Park Rangers. They also climbed to number three in the table with the three points. Saunders scored his eighth goal of the season after his £2.3 million moves from Liverpool in September.
The pressure was mounting from all quarters for English Football’s most successful manager, Brian Clough after the 1-0 defeat at the hands of Ipswich. Nottingham Forest found themselves at the bottom of the premier league after 14 games. After 18 trophy filled years club, the fans had started to turn on the manager after Ipswich became the fourth club that season to take maximum premier league points away at Forest.
Everton chairman Dr. David Marsh called for a united front at Goodison Park as the club strived to edge away from the top flight danger zone. Dr. Marsh once again reiterated the cold, hard fact of life that cash throughout the Premier league was extremely tight with Everton, in tandem with a host of clubs, were feeling the pinch of the recession. It was clear that the club had to sell first in order to buy more players but despite one-third of the season gone, the toffees were not to press the panic button.
Trevor Francis, the Sheffield Wednesday manager believed that Kenny Dalglish’s Blackburn Rovers could become the first side to win the premier league. The two sides played out a goalless draw a few days ago and Francis said “When a team is top at this stage, people inevitably question whether they can stay there. I feel Rovers are there on merit and there is no reason why they shouldn’t win the title.”
