In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are reviving some of the moments from past which will restore golden history of the best league in the world.

Wednesday papers in the UK covered the latest defensive signing that Liverpool was about to make, a must-win match for Everton boss Howard Kendall, Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson was trying to calm the tensions before facing Paul Mcgrath in the Cup and Tottenham keeper was worried of losing his national team spot due to lack of playing time at White Hart Lane.

Liverpool was set to sign Stig Inge Bjornebye, a Norwegian international who had impressed the Reds’ boss when playing for Rosenborg BK in a preseason friendly. Souness also saw him play when Norway faced England at Wembley a few weeks earlier. Bjornebye was flying to England to complete his £50000 move to Anfield. Souness said “Norway have been an emerging nation over the last 10 years and they are bringing a lot of quality players through. They have caught up Denmark, Their players are very professional.”

Everton boss Howard Kendall was facing a must-win match as rumors were doing the round that an if results did not pick up immediately, the Blues boss could be facing the axe. Everton was facing Wimbledon in the Coca Cola cup but their league form had been terrible that season. After a shock victory over Blackburn Rovers in September, they had suffered three back to back defeats and only managed a point against Convetry in the previous week.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson tried to defuse the tension before his side faced Aston Villa where he was set to come up against Paul Mcgrath, his ex-player and someone who was in controversy following Ferguson’s latest book. Mcgrath was so furious about Ferguson’s remarks about him that he was planning to sue the United boss. Ferguson tried to calm the situation down and said “In 18 years as a manager I have never criticized a player in public before, but my book set out to describe my six-year of management at Old Trafford and unavoidably I had to deal with several controversial issues. Paul was one of them and I had to describe certain events to explain why I let a great player leave Old Trafford.”

Eric Thorstvedt, the Tottenham Hotspur keeper and a Norwegian international was worried about his future after having not featured for the North London club in three months resulting in his national team goalkeeping position coming under jeopardy. Thorstvedt had not played for Spurs since their 5-0 defeat at Leeds in August and he said “It has been a difficult time for me playing in the reserves. The Norway manager says he wants everyone to play first-team football and really that’s all any player wants to do.”
