Monday papers in the UK covered the news of struggles of Middlesborough and Everton following another week without a victory in the premier league, Manchester United’s hunt for a striker continued in order to add goals to the team and Liverpool registered their best performance of the season with a four-goal drubbing of Norwich.

Injury ravaged Middlesborough were showing terrific resilience despite extending their run of games without a win to eight after their draw against Sheffield Wednesday the previous weekend. Lenny Lawrence’s men still held on to the ninth point in the premier league and with two or three players back from injury, things were starting to look better for them. What Boro lacked in skill, they made up for in effort and battled hard throughout to earn a point when it would have been surely been three if key players like Willy Falconer and John Hendrie had been available.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was weighing up a possible bid for Tore Andre Dahlum. The Norwegian international striker was the latest candidate for the urgent job of providing a cutting edge to the Old Trafford team’s goal-shy attack. United wanted to buy Alan Shearer from Southampton in the previous summer but balked at the asking price of £3 million. Shearer since then moved to Blackburn Rovers and had scored 15 goals already by October. United had scored only four goals in their previous five matches and one of their recent recruits Dion Dublin, a strike bought from Cambridge for £1 million was out till Christmas.

Stylish Liverpool shrugged off another Bruce Grobbelaar blunder to storm to their best win of the season to prevent Norwich climbing back to the top of the premier league. A mix up between Grobbelaar and Danish defender Torben Piechnik led to Ian Butterworth giving lead only after 65 seconds. But thanks to deadly marksmanship of Michael Thomas, Don Hutchison, and David Burrows plus a last-minute Mark Walters penalty Liverpool finally silenced the chirpy Canaries.

Everton boss Howard Kendall was facing extreme pressure from the media and the fans after is side suffered another defeat at the hands of gunners that week. He wrote in a newspaper column that it wasn’t a good afternoon and his team deserved what he got. He also acknowledged the fact that his side must produce results quickly to avoid getting relegated and said “When I looked at the job when I first returned, I knew it would take a considerable time. I am aware of things must improve very quickly. One word fans don’t like to hear is ‘patience’ and so I’m not using it.”
