Wednesday papers in the UK were looking ahead to the rearranged match between Middlesborough and Nottingham Forest, Kenny Dalglish’s return to Anfield to face his former team was set to be televised and Ian Snodin was finally glad to be fit and playing after a two-year injury break.

Middlesborough was bidding to end a 25-year jinx by beating Nottingham Forest in their re-arranged game at the City ground later that night. Borough manager Lennie Lawrence said “I’ve never won against him (Brian Clough), I’ve not had much luck. But there is a first time for everything.” Forest had surprised many people by struggling at the foot of the Premier league table with just one win to their name in 11 games. Paul Wilkinson had recovered from a gashed head to face his former club but Steve Pears was doubtful for the game after a minor groin problem.

The other manager in the game, under pressure Brian Clough was also staring into an unwanted record in his face. Forest had won just one out of their opening 11 premier league games. The previous time they were on a comparable run was when Clough first took over in 1975. Clough though was adamant that he won’t change his style and he defended himself by saying “I’m far too old to change and if somebody wanted me to alter out the style I wouldn’t know how to do it. I will stick to my style of football as long as I am a Nottingham Forest manager.”

Kenny Dalglish’s emotional return to Anfield was to be screened live by BSkyB. Dalglish had just celebrated his first anniversary at Blackburn, the club he joined nine months after quitting Liverpool because of pressures of the job. He was now to return to face his former club on Sunday, December 13 in what was to be Blackburn’s third satellite showing of the season. Liverpool, on the other hand, was to be shown on the telly for the seventh time that season.
