In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.
Monday papers in the UK covered the only game played in the Premier League on the previous day where two late goals from Mark Hughes earned Manchester United a draw against Liverpool, Everton manager Howard Kendall was willing to change his formation to accommodate all of his best players, Norwich City saluted their hero Bryan Gunn who put in a brave performance to put aside a personal tragedy just a week earlier and looked ahead to the blockbuster clash between Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers.
Ian Rush earned a super salute from his Welsh international strike partner Mark Hughes. Hughes, whose late double denied Liverpool three points in a thrilling 2-2 draw with Manchester United. Rush had earlier grabbed Liverpool’s second goal on the stroke of half time to become Liverpool’s all-time top scorer with 287 goals, moving ahead of Roger Hunt’s tally of 286.
Everton manager Howard Kendall was ready to persevere with a new tactical formation to ensure his best players were in the side and playing their part in a much-needed revival. The return of Martin Keown after injury threatened the Blues’ boss with a tricky selection poser for the Coventry game. But he dealt with it by playing Keown, Dave Watson, and Gary Ablett in the middle with Andy Hinchcliffe and Robert Warzycha acting as the wide men.
Norwich City players joined Carrow Road’s biggest crowd of the season in a salute to brave goalkeeper Bryan Gunn after his crucial saves against luckless Queens Park Rangers that helped Norwich to go back to the top of the premier league. That Gunn turned out at all, less than a week after his little daughter Francesca’s death from leukemia, was remarkable in itself but to perform the way he did, earning a man of the match award was a testimony to the former Scottish International’s character and courage.
Aston Villa’s Irish connection was set to be back to full strength for their Premier League clash with Blackburn Rovers at Villa Park later that day. Paul Mcgrath and Steve Staunton, who both missed the international duty were confident that they will recover for the match. For Blackburn, the evergreen Kevin Moran was against set to be at the heart of Kenny Dalglish’s defense.
