In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are reviving some of the moments from past which will restore golden history of the best league in the world.
Wednesday’s papers in the UK covered Chelsea boss Ian Porterfield’s pursuit of a new central defender, the injury news ahead of Queens Park Rangers’ trip to Norwich, uncertain future of the Stamford Bridge and a pleasant selection dilemma for Liverpool boss Graeme Souness.
Chelsea boss Ian Porterfield was set to make the final decision on Polish International defender Roman Szewczyk after watching him in international action against Holland. Szewczyk had already spent some time at the Stamford Bridge under a trail and Porterfield was considering meeting the £500000 demand from the Polish club Katowice. He was to replace Paul Elliot and Porterfield had also singled out AC Milan Star Ruud Gullit as another potential replacement.
Meanwhile, Queens Park Rangers were set to travel to Norwich City without four of their star players who had picked up injuries on the international duty. Alan Mcdonald, Andy Sinton, David Bardsley, and Andrew Impey were all sidelined due to injuries picked up playing for their national teams. Norwich, on the other hand, was going into the match after being displaced from the top of the premier league as Blackburn Rovers replaced them with a seven-goal thrashing.
The future of Chelsea football club’s Stamford Bridge home was thrown into doubt when the owner, property group Cabra Estates, revealed that it was negotiating a sale with a mystery buyer. Chelsea chairman Ken Bates believed in July that he had wrapped up a deal with Cabra for the freehold of the stadium. But Cabra said no satisfactory conclusion had been reached with the club.
Liverpool manager Graeme Souness returned to Melwood with a pleasant selection dilemma before facing Manchester United in the premier league later that weekend. Apart from Rob Jones, even Mark Wright had come through the reserves game against Wolves unscathed and had presented their case to be in the squad against the Red Devils.
