In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are reviving some of the moments from past which will restore golden history of the best league in the world.

Tuesday papers in the UK covered the row between the Scottish and English FA which could result in Premier League matches being blocked across the border, Liverpool star Rob Jones back in action after two months and a selection dilemma for Graeme Souness ahead of clash with Manchester United and a fresh insight into the events leading up to Kenny Dalglish’s resignation from Liverpool.

A premier league broadcasting clause threatened to blow up in the face of the English FA and Scottish FA. Main broadcaster of football matches in the region, Sky, decided to televise the English national team’s match between England and Norway instead of Scotland’s match against Portugal, even in mainland Scotland. Earlier in the year, BSkyB signed a deal to televise Premier League matches for a record £304 million. In the light of the events, the Scottish FA threatened to blackout premier league matches and the charity shield matches using its veto power.

Liverpool star Rob Jones made his first appearance for his club’s reserves after his shin splints operation which had kept him out for the most part of two months. The upcoming clash with arch-rivals Manchester United may have come too early for him but an outing without any trouble meant that he had a chance to get into the squad for the next premier league game. His last game before the injury was against Chelsea in the first week of September.

On the other hand, his namesake, Lee Jones, the club captain of Liverpool gave his manager Graeme Souness a selection headache with declaring himself fit again after a three-game layoff amid transfer speculation. The new central defensive partnership for the Reds’ with Steve Nicol & Torben Piechnik kept their first clean sheet for a while against Sheffield Wednesday and the dilemma of sticking with the pair against picking the £2.2 million player and club captain was looming large.

A Merseyside writer Stephen Kelly’s upcoming unofficial biography of Kenny Dalglish offered some insights into the infamous decision of Dalglish deciding to resign as the manager of Liverpool. Dalglish was suffering from extreme pressure and his health was deteriorating because of that, in a meeting with the club’s top management, he said that he felt like his head would explode on the matchdays because of the stress. The never-ending quest for success, the Hillsborough disaster and off-field pressures were taking a toll on his health and family.
