Sunday papers in the UK covered the news of Middlesborough first-choice goalkeeper Stephen Pears returning to full fitness, Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson’s controversial revelations about Paul Mcgrath in his latest book, Graeme Souness’ methods, tactics, and signings were under question after unimpressive start to the season and Everton happy to see Ian Snodin back to full fitness after almost two years out with injuries.
Middlesborough was banking on their first choice keeper Stephen Pears to make himself fit before their clash against Tottenham Hotspur in a week. The international break had come at the right time for them as they lost their reserve goalkeeper Ian Ironside last week during the Coca Cola cup clash with Newcastle.
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was facing criticism for deciding to sell out some extracts of his book to the Sun newspaper. One of those sections involved in the book was about one of his former and Aston Villa player Paul Mcgrath. Ferguson revealed that Mcgrath had drinking problems, and he even brought in a priest to try and help him out. The revelations had not gone down well, and he was being criticized for putting Mcgrath and his family in a difficult situation in front of the public eye.
Liverpool manager Graeme Souness’ training methods and backroom staff choices were getting questioned after the results and performances had taken a tumble since Ex Glasgow Manager had taken over. He already had likes of Ronnie Moran, Phil Thompson & Roy Evans at the club, but he brought in Phil Boersma into the backroom staff. Apart from Rob Jones, most of his new signings were struggling to make an impact & the injury list at the club was horrific. Tommy Smith on his Wednesday column in the Liverpool Echo wrote about the anger of the fans that were upset after the public spat between Souness & Phil Thomson leading the later’s ousting from the club.
In a piece of good news for the Everton fans, Ian Snodin was almost back to fitness and was set to take the field for the first time in Bruce Grobbelaar’s testimonial match. The talented Yorkshireman had been down with multiple injuries and had missed the majority of the football in the previous two years. A couple of years prior, he had established himself as the first-choice central midfielder before a persistent hamstring injury kept him out of action for a long time. For an Everton team struggling with injuries and loss of form, the news Snodin soon returning to action was a welcome boost.
